It's Fair Time

The Fair Comes To Town

The fair is here! Elvis Impersonators, sequin-clad showgirls and choreographed musical performers will bring a taste of Las Vegas to this year's Florida State Fair.

Events will include a Las Vegas-style tribute to half-time shows and the national Elvis impersonator competition finals, in addition to food, rides and other attractions for the whole family.

Hours are 9 a.m. until closing Thursday to Feb. 16. Closing times vary depending on the day. Visitors can enjoy an abundance of events, including professional wrestling demonstrations, a roller derby championship and the Country Gold Tour 2009, featuring many popular country singers. There also will be food, games and prizes.

Creating Art From Clay
Art instructor Ira McEachern will host a series of workshops for residents who like to create art from clay, or would like to learn.

The first will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. Students will create the art pieces that will later be fired in a kiln. The second workshop will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 14, and the third will be Feb. 21.

Students will paint their artwork using ceramic glaze. Pieces will include square platters and three-dimensional face tiles.

Classes will be held at 3401 Pittwood Road, Valrico, and limited to a minimum of six students and maximum of 15. Cost is $60 per person.

Catch 'Hamlet' The Musical

Students at the Academic Achievement Center in Seffner will perform an adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" at the James McCabe Theater, 506 Fifth St., Valrico, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 and 14.

The center offers support, enrichment and challenges for gifted students with learning disabilities in grades two through 12 and participates in the McKay Scholarship Program for students with disabilities.

Proceeds from the show will benefit the students' trip to Panama.

Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $4 for students ages 13 or younger. Call (813) 654-4198 for information and reservations.

Audition For 'The Fantasticks'

StageDoor Performing Arts, a local nonprofit theater group, invites children and adults to audition for an upcoming production of "The Fantasticks," about a young man and the girl next door whose parents have built a wall to keep them apart.

Participants must prepare a one-minute song, with or without a backup track. Auditions will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 and 17 at Limona Village Chapel, 408 Limona Road, west of Brandon High School. Callbacks will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 18.

Shows will be performed May 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16.

Classic Car Show To Benefit ECHO

The Emergency Care Help Organization and Lifestyle Family Fitness will join forces for the first Charity Car Show to Benefit ECHO, which helps the homeless and families in need throughout the Brandon area.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Lifestyle parking lot, 623 Oakfield Drive.

The show will include old and the not-so-old model automobiles. Registration fee is $15.
