Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association at 619 Vonderburg Drive, Brandon, brings a light and bright breath of spring to the local art scene with a mother-and-daughter show that's all about color, texture and composition.

The mixed-media collage and acrylic paintings by FishHawk arts activist Anne Drewry and her daughter, Elizabeth Beck of Atlanta, are on exhibit at Center Place through Feb. 27. Their works bring their diverse but quirky viewpoints together with mutual interpretations of words and color.

It's obvious the creative gene has been passed on. And they have been continuing their studies together by taking workshops and participating in art camps nationwide since 1982.

Drewry earned her bachelor's degree in sociology from Oberlin College in Ohio, holds a master's degree in education from Boston University, and has been an artist and activist since 1992.

She has held the positions of Greater Brandon Arts Council vice president, two-time president of the Brandon League of Fine Arts, and member of the board of directors of the Florida Watercolor Society and the Hillsborough County Arts Council.

"When a person finds something that excites, satisfies and energizes her, that something should become a part of that person's life. So, for me, it is with art and volunteering for the arts," Drewry said.

"We get along perfectly," says Beck, a mother of three who studied art as an undergraduate at Emory University, where she earned a master's degree in education.

Beck admits that working in collages takes up a lot of space. She collects maps, dictionary pages and bingo cards that she buys on the Internet and uses to complement her artwork.

"I am absolutely terrified of a plain white canvas. I think it's scary when you start the creative process that way, so I cover it up as quickly as possible with paper, paint, successive glazes and heavy duty acrylic paint," said Beck, whose favorite colors, orange and turquoise, are reflected in the exhibit.

"A mother and daughter show is something I've dreamed about," Drewry said. "We complement each other but approach our examination of the words and color we used as inspiration for the show differently. It's just wonderful to be able to do this together."
