LITHIA - Typically, when the county puts out a call for lifeguards, it gets 20 or 25 applicants.
This year may be different, says Kevin Church, general manager for the county's Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department. Still, he has four or five positions to fill for Lithia Springs Park.
Candidates must be at least 16 and have a current American Red Cross Life Guarding Certificate. Pay starts at $9 an hour, and all applicants must undergo a background check.
Lifeguards work daily in the open-water swimming area from Memorial Day through Labor Day and some weekends before and after prime swimming season, depending on the weather.
Don't dally in applying.
"We put out an opening for a Ranger I position, which usually gets 15 or 20 applications, and we got 744," Church said. "We haven't filled it yet, but, boy, do we got the candidates. There are lots of well-rounded, well-educated people on the list."
Lithia Springs Park is on the Alafia River at 3932 Lithia Springs Road. The springs and swimming area are its main attractions.
