Operation Boomerang, designed to let gang members know that law enforcement is not going away, has led to about 75 arrests.

Investigators say they've spent about seven months on the operation, a joint effort between Hillsborough deputies, Tampa police, Florida Highway Patrol, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Marshals Service.

The investigation led to active warrants on 125 gang members or associates. Many face drug charges; others face charges ranging from not appearing in court on an attempted murder charge to driving without a valid license. Some of those arrested likely will face racketeering charges, Maj. Albert Frost said.

Residents of Tampa, Brandon, Riverview, Lakeland, Apollo Beach, Plant City, Ruskin and Seffner were among those included in the warrants.

The overall operation led to the seizure of 2 kilograms of cocaine, 582 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 156 pounds of marijuana, eight firearms and a total of $60,000 in cash and vehicles.

The operation targeted 17 gangs, including Latin Kings, Sur 13, Draks and Bloods. About 45 investigators participated in making arrests today.

"I think it had a great impact," Frost said. "It sends a message to the public that we are here."

There are about 1,800 official gang members in Hillsborough County alone, Frost said.

Deputies held a news conference today about the arrests.
