GIBSONTON - Instead of tossing the old television, loaded with environmentally unfriendly lead, there is a local alternative.
Sets can be dropped off on the second Saturday of each month at Hillsborough County's South County electronics collection center, located on Powell Road a quarter mile north of Big Bend Road and U.S. 41 South.
Most analog television sets contain 4 to 8 pounds of lead and other harmful substances, so they cannot be thrown in with the regular household garbage.
If sets are still in good working order, consider donating them to charity. Or keep them to use for playing movies or video games.
For more information, call (813) 272-5680 or go to www.hillsboroughcounty.org/solidwaste, then click on "household chemicals & electronics collections."
