BRANDON - An army of troops deployed this month locally and nationwide are on a mission to knock on doors with a sweet sales pitch.
The Girl Scouts of West Central Florida kicked off the national organization's annual cookie program Jan. 9 with door-to-door sales, which run through February. Home deliveries begin Feb. 22, and in March, the Scouts will station cookie booths in front of grocery and retail stores.
If the cookies don't come to you, a "Cookie Booth Locator" - new on the council's Web site this year - allows customers to search by ZIP code for sales spots. The Cookies From Home section of the site allows people or businesses to buy cookies online and have them sent directly to U.S. soldiers stationed overseas in combat zones.
Cookie varieties offered this year are Thin Mints, Do-Si-Dos, Samoas, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Sugar Free Chocolate Chips, Lemon Chalet Cremes and Dulce de Leche.
Proceeds from the program, after the cost of cookies are covered, benefit local Girl Scouts troops in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Marion, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sumter counties.
