LITHIA - We know that gangs cannot exist without members, and that they prey upon and recruit vulnerable children.
Our children need us to be informed to protect them from this unsavory element.
To raise parental, student and community awareness about gangs and how to recognize the typical signs of gang activity, the Newsome High School Parent Teacher Student Association will present a Gang Awareness Workshop on Tuesday evening in the school auditorium.
Newsome's school resource officer, Hillsborough County Deputy Mike Alonso, said although an increase in gang activity has not been noted in our schools, a recent incident that occurred in FishHawk Ranch indicates a need to address the issue in our schools.
Alonso will lead the workshop, along with other area school resource officers with years of experience in local law enforcement and the sheriff's office Gang Task Force.
The workshop will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Newsome, 16550 FishHawk Blvd., and is open to parents, students and anyone in the community.
We have such a great community with great schools, parents, administrators and kids, and we want to keep it that way. We need everyone's eyes and ears to protect our community and our children.
