RUSKIN - It's spring, and there's no better time to get outdoors and enjoy the wonders of nature at Camp Bayou.

The nature preserve and outdoor learning center will host its semi-annual open house April 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., giving visitors the opportunity to see and do many of the free, family-friendly activities offered throughout the year to anyone who enjoys being outdoors.

This No Child Left Inside event is part of National Environmental Education Week and an early Earth Day celebration.

Camp Bayou is a partnership between the Ruskin Community Development Foundation and Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation. It is located three miles south of State Road 674 at 4140 24th St. S.E. in Ruskin.

SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES

8 a.m. — Great American Cleanup begins. Register at Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful- http://khcbonline.org/.

9 a.m. — Trail games begin; butterfly bingo, scavenger hunt, riddle-me-this and more

10 a.m. — Wetland Walk-n-Wade. Take a walk through the wetlands to the river to see what critters we can net.

11 a.m. — Nature crafts. Get into the outdoors with a variety of nature-related craft projects.

Noon — Spring brunch; buffet fundraiser featuring vegetarian items; $10 per person

1 p.m. — Slide show; environmental education for children and adults

Open all day — Fossil museum; fossil pit dig; small fee; nature center; three trails through varied habitats; canoe launch; native village; native plants nursery; cart tours every half hour, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
