See a figure skating competition

BRANDON - Here's your chance to see figure skating live - and for free.

The Ice Sports Forum invites spectators to its 12{+t}{+h} annual Fall Challenge Competition from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Ice Sports Forum, 10222 Elizabeth Place, Tampa.

More than 170 figure skaters will compete in technical solo and production numbers in this invitational event sanctioned by the Ice Skating Institute, said skating director Tommy Brannen.

All ages will be represented, from 2-year-old Rylie Messenger of Lithia, appearing in her first figure-skating competition, to 69-year-old Lucy Deiley of Tampa.

Other local participants include Evan Rozet and Madison Gauvreau of Lithia; Kamron Blanton of Mango; Brandon residents Alex Bailey, Ashlyn Gaughan, Lisa Gullett, Christopher Martin, Erin Martin, Sagan Savage, Kaylee Swenson and Alexis VanVliet; Valrico residents Virginia Cowles, Michelle Fee, Caitlyn Goble, Natalie Mack and Isabella Ramirez; and Riverview residents Jillian Ruck, Courtney O'Connor, Darci Conklin, Lauren Brittain, Amanda Bishop and Jillian Arnold.

Veterans Day remembrance

TAMPA - More than 100 Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadets from Armwood, Bloomingdale, Brandon, Durant and Riverview high schools will assist at the Hillsborough Veterans Council's annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial Museum and Park, 3602 U.S. 301 N.

Steven Scott, medical director of the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, will speak. The council will present an Edwin Porterfield Award posthumously to the late supervisor of elections and former Hillsborough County Commissioner Phyllis Busansky.

Veterans organizations and the public are invited to this free event to honor the nation's veterans. There will be refreshments and seating under a tent.

WAVES come ashore in Riverview

RIVERVIEW - The Tampa Bay WAVES Unit 55 will meet in a new place at 11 a.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall of St. Matthews Anglican Church, 10701 Bloomingdale Ave.

Women who served honorably or are serving in the military sea services may attend.

Lions selling luminaries

It's time for the Brandon Lions Club's annual luminary kit sale.

Kits are $6 and cost less for orders of more than 100. They contain 15 candles, 15 white bags, sand, matches and instructions.

Kits should be ordered by Tuesday. They may be prepaid or paid when picked up Dec. 5 at the Brandon Lions Clubhouse, 610 Limona Road.

Delivery of quantities of more than 25 kits will take place Dec. 5.

Money raised will benefit Brandon Lions Charities Inc. and other local nonprofit groups.

The club wants to hear from another organization that would like to become a partner in this fun and profitable fundraiser.

Riverview singer plans CD launch

Melissa Brethauer of Riverview, a 20-year-old singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and Crystal Blue Sound Studios October 2009 Artist of the Month, will be the headline performer at Music Showcase's Venue Night to launch her debut CD, "Waiting," at 7 p.m. Friday at Music Showcase, 402 Oakfield Drive.

Tickets are $5 at the door.

See a ballet at the bookstore

The Brandon Ballet will perform from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore, 122 Town Center Drive, to promote its Dec. 12 and 13 production of "The Nutcracker Ballet."

There also will be a book fair fundraiser to benefit the ballet from Thursday through Monday at any Barnes & Noble store.

Durant High to present plays

PLANT CITY - Durant High School drama students will present three one-act plays in "A Night of One Acts" at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday in the Durant High School auditorium, 4748 Cougar Path. Tickets are $5.

The plays are "In the Wings," written and directed by senior Sarah Bernier; "Legend of Sleepy Hollow," adapted from Washington Irving's story by Lindsay Price and directed by first-time student-director Amanda Zappia; and a parody of musicals by Gerard Alessandrini called "Forbidden Broadway," directed by Ed Mason, Durant's theater sponsor.

Casts include Gerrit Butler, Jake Simmons, Chris Tousignant and Mackenzie Jenkins of Valrico, and Zappia and TyLynn Eben of Plant City.

Upcoming productions by the school will include "The 25{+t}{+h} Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" in January and "The Crucible" in April.

Plant auction benefits youths

DOVER - Shrubs, trees, ground cover, flowers, herbs and garden supplies will be on sale at the 2009 Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association Plant Auction at 1 p.m. Saturday during the Hillsborough County Fair at the new Hillsborough County Fairgrounds, 4810 State Road 60 E.

The auction is being held courtesy of the Tampa Bay chapter of the association, Hillsborough County Fair Authority and University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Hillsborough County Extension Service.

Proceeds will pay for youth ornamental horticulture activities and scholarships.

Admission to the fair (necessary to get to the auction) is $5.

'Blending' art show opens at the Mook

Meet the artists at a reception for an exhibit, "Blending Artistic Elements: Water, Paint and Creativity," from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Mook Gallery at Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association, 619 Vonderburg Drive.

The show will continue through Nov. 25 and includes works by local artists Sue Allen, Anne Drewry, Betty Fairbanks, Cheryl Jorgensen, Debbie Cason Rankin, Roxanne Tobaison and Susan Weilbacher.

This fundraiser will benefit the foundation's 3-year-old Angel Program, which assists people suffering from life-threatening diseases or catastrophes by linking them with businesses or individuals who can supply services, resources or time.
