Doctors needed for Peru trip

Published: November 18, 2009

BRANDON - The Luz Fund is seeking a pediatrician and an OB/GYN specialist to take part in a mission to a hospital in Juanjui, Peru, in January.

The doctors would be part of a scouting mission Jan. 16-23 to inspect the local hospital in preparation for a full medical mission in summer 2010.

Doctors would be required to provide their own travel expenses, which include flying from Tampa to Tarapoto, Peru, then from there to Juanjui. They would also pay for some food and lodging.

Participants in the January scouting trip would have first choice for consideration on return visits to Peru and other medical missions sponsored by earthMed and The Luz Fund.

The Luz Fund is a Brandon organization helping children of the world receive needed medical care in local hospitals, such as Shriners, regardless of their ability to pay. Because of recent history of The Luz Fund and the children assisted in the Brandon and Tampa areas, every effort is being made to incorporate local health care professionals on this endeavor.

At the invitation of the regional minister of health and the hospital's medical director, participants will hold a field clinic at the hospital and in the community. The results of the field clinic and hospital inspection will provide information regarding the needs of the community which can be addressed during planning for the summer mission.

During a three-day field clinic, we could expect to see up to 300 patients. We will have a general surgery team during the summer mission, likely at the Tarapoto hospital. Our cardiac surgery team will investigate an opportunity for a one- to two-week mission to Los Ninos Hospital in Lima.

The mission will be governed through The Luz Fund and earthMed, both of which are nonprofit charities. For information about earthMed, go to www.earthMed.org.

Interested doctors can contact Chuck Mulhern at (813) 215-0071 or TheLuz Fund@verizon.net.

The education of local nurses, doctors and technicians to help raise their skill levels will do much to raise the standard of health care in the local community. This will also help to bring the true compassionate face of America to those in need.

Chuck Mulhern is founder of The Luz Fund and assistant director of earthMed.
