BRANDON - A group of senior citizens who attend a local church recently took to the stage to share some pearls of wisdom and a smile or two with their congregation.

Seniors from Rivers of Life Church Ministries performed "Pearls of Wisdom," a show designed to demonstrate that older people have a lot to offer.

With the opening lines from a poem by Maya Angelou, the seniors showed just what they are made of: "When my bones are stiff and aching, and my feet won't climb the stair, I will only ask one favor, don't bring me no rocking chair."

And they certainly didn't need rocking chairs during the show. The group enthusiastically shared pearls of wisdom recalling the sometimes painful, often joyous process of surviving many years of tough living.

"Gramma and Grampa Hammie" took the audience back to the days of a 5-cent ice cream cone and a 19-cent gallon of gasoline. They recalled wearing shoes repaired with pieces of cardboard, and how five people shared the same bath water.

The tone of the show turned serious when they spoke about marriage and how a relationship, if created by God, can withstand anything.

The final act made the audience laugh at themselves and their preoccupation with matters of health.

The seniors plan to produce another "Pearls of Wisdom" show. It was an entertaining experience for young people and families who could perhaps learn much from those who have "been there."

Deri Wilson, a member of Rivers of Life Church Ministries, produces the church newsletter. Pastor Curtis A. Swafford invites the public to 7:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday services at the church, 301 Lakewood Drive, Brandon. For information, call (813) 643-38
