BRANDON - School food drives typically get the Emergency Care Help Organization through the holiday season.
Not so much in this tough economy.
"The food drives we've always had, we're getting half what we normally do," said Stacy Efaw, program manager for ECHO, which provides food and clothing to people on an emergency basis.
So, they're calling on businesses to get involved.
The new program, entitled Every Can Counts, is meant to encourage giving what you can.
"The idea is to give people a way to help, to give back," Efaw said. "If they can only give one or two cans, that's okay. If we all give a little, it'll add up."
To participate, just stick a box in the lobby of a business asking people to contribute canned goods and non-perishable food items. It can be decorated or plain and doesn't have to be sanctioned by ECHO in advance. But, ECHO does have boxes for those who need them. Call (813) 685-0935.
Donors can receive tax deductible receipts on request.
Donations can be dropped off at ECHO between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center is located at 507 N. Parsons Ave., in Brandon.
