RIVERVIEW - While most kids were relaxing and having fun throughout the summer, gymnast Ivana Benson was in the gym training an average of eight hours per day to prepare herself for the Level 10 national championships in rhythmic gymnastics.
All of her hard work paid off. Not only did the 15-year-old qualify to earn the right to be a level 10 athlete and participate in the Visa National Championships, but in her first competition as a Level 10 she qualified for the all-around finals.
By making the finals she has been classified as an elite gymnast and is now ranked as the 11th best rhythmic gymnast in the country.
She lives in Brandon and trains with Tampa Bay Rhythmics in Riverview.
Her next goal is to make the top eight by this time next year and represent the United States at international competitions.
She most likely will travel to some international competitions this season to gain experience before representing the country. For information, call Tampa Bay Rhythmics at (813) 741-2827.
Tyana Marlowe is the owner of Tampa Bay Rhythmics.
