Brandon Elks Club gives dictionaries to local 3rd-graders

BRANDON - Brandon Elks Lodge 2383 will have presented dictionaries to 300 third-graders at Alafia and Nelson elementary schools and Nativity Catholic School by Oct. 16, the anniversary of dictionary writer Noah Webster's birth. Inside the cover of each book is the Elks' motto: "Elks Care-Elks Share" and the lodge name.

The Dictionary Project is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the reading, writing and creative thinking of students by distributing as many dictionaries as possible.

The Elks' sponsorship and distribution of the books also helps other youth projects, said Jim Turner, past exalted ruler and lodge project chairman.

Technology tools presented to blind

A presentation about technological tools to assist the blind and people with low vision will be made by John Palmer of Magnifying America, courtesy of the East Hillsborough Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 10 in the H2U Classroom of Brandon Regional Hospital at Oakfield Medical Plaza, 228 Moon Ave. S.

Lunch will be provided for free.

Lions to assist runners across finish line

The Brandon Lions Club will assist Coach Robert Maestas with the 27th-annual countywide Don Bishop Invitational high-school cross-country meet at 8 a.m. Saturday at Brandon High School.

Leo Club members from Brandon, Bloomingdale and Newsome high schools are invited to help at the meet, which was named for a generous and well-respected former Brandon High School teacher.

Todd Agnew, 2 groups to be in concert

Todd Agnew and the groups, Building 429 and Kimber Rising, part of the Promise Remains Tour, will be in concert at 7 p.m. Friday, in the sanctuary of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 3315 Bryan Road. The concert, sponsored by the church's Breakthrough Student Ministries, is for people of all ages.

Register now for writers' conference

LITHIA - The Florida Inspirational Writers Retreat will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 14, at Cedarkirk Camp and Conference Center, 1920 Streetman Drive.

Topics for beginning and experienced writers include organizing and planning, self-editing, submissions and queries, developing one's voice, inspirational shorts and turning articles into books. They will be presented by workshop directors Debora M. Coty and Ruth C. Ellinger and authors Eva Marie Everson, Sue Miholer and Larry Leech.

The cost is $95 per person before Oct. 15, and $115 after.

A separate Night Owl evening with dinner, entertainment, networking, lodging and breakfast also is available for an additional $75.

Church to hold Pink Ribbon Tea

St. Andrew's United Methodist Church will host its annual Pink Ribbon Tea from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday in the church's Family Center, 3315 Bryan Road. Lisa Brock will speak.

The event is free; however, donations to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation are suggested. Tea, a light lunch and fashion show by Dress Barn will be provided.

The Rev. Susan Lewis, one of the church's pastors, is a breast cancer survivor. She considers the Pink Ribbon Tea a celebration for survivors and a chance to give back to the community that supported her during her illness by helping educate women about the disease.

Golf tournament raises cancer awareness

Players and sponsors are invited to the Angela Musette Russo Foundation Golf Tournament Oct. 9, at Plantation Palms, 23253 Plantation Palms Blvd., Land O'Lakes. Registration and breakfast will take place at 7 a.m. Play will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Breakfast, lunch, refreshments, awards and goodie bags will be included in the $150 per player fee. Sponsorships may be arranged through Friday.

Dick Russo and Lillian Wiebeld of Brandon started the Angela Musette Russo Foundation in honor of their daughter who died of breast cancer at age 27 in 1996.

The tournament will benefit the foundation's scholarship fund for women in Florida State University's School of Theatre, the American Cancer Society and the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute.

Nuts on sale for the holidays

Prices will be the same as last year, Hamilton said. Nut orders will be delivered to homes in Brandon beginning Nov. 14.

Money raised supports the Nativity Outreach Food Pantry, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, diocesan seminarians and more.
