The Florida Highway Patrol reopened Interstate 4 this morning around 3:30 a.m. Authorities had closed two eastbound lanes of I-4 near Williams Road Monday afternoon after a Tampa Electric project caused part of the highway to buckle. ...more

Political seasoning Regarding Guy Kenney's letter, "Getting really tired of professional, power-hungry politicians in Florida" (Nov. 26), what is this guy talking about? Jim Norman has been in only one office during his political career, and that's as a Hillsborough County commissioner. He had two terms in one district and two terms in a countywide district. Bob Graham's administration placed an important legal framework in place in Florida to control rampant, undisciplined growth that threatened wetlands, induced traffic congestion and promoted random sprawl. Until that landmark legislation, developers virtually built where they pleased, and taxpayers had to follow with schools, roads, sewers and the rest of the infrastructure that necessarily followed development. ...more

Don't expect to use the Cass Street bridge this weekend. The bridge, which was shut down for repairs this year after it was deemed "structurally deficient," was expected to be open by the end of this month but likely will remain closed until early 2010. ...more
