Last Friday the U.S. Labor Department announced that nearly 540,000 Americans lost their jobs in April. As bad as that sounds, last month's jobless total was less than most economists had predicted. In fact, it was the lowest increase in joblessness in 14 months. Miss America made her first visit this morning as the official goodwill ambassador for the Children's Miracle Network, an organization that raises millions each year for hospitals across the country. And she did so at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg. "This is my very, very first day on the job," said Katie Stam, 22, who was Miss Indiana before she was crowned Miss America on Jan. 24. Much has been made about the greening of the Super Bowl. The NFL has assisted with planting trees in our community that help to offset carbon emissions associated with major Super Bowl-sanctioned events. This is the fifth year that urban forestry projects have been implemented; however, Super Bowl XLIII marks the first year that long-term environmental impact monitoring will take place for the tree plantings. ...more
