We all know current economic times are stressful; there is a significant lack of funds coming into our state and local government. Our schools are suffering losses in income. I have read reports that Highlands County will need to operate with at least 30 less teachers next year. My basic question is, can we continue to offer quality education to our students with 30 fewer teachers? ...more

Rocco Baldelli led the major leagues in love Friday. The Rays were reunited at last with those pesky Red Sox, and Baldelli made the trip up from Fort Myers to be DH - designated hugger. He saw old friends everywhere, faces from the Rays' from-nowhere run to the World Series, which carried past Boston in the American League Championship Series. Not long ago we had a bunch of aspiring pols begging for our votes and promising to give us the world in a hand basket if we would vote for them, right? Well guess what? We voted them into the place of their dreams so wouldn't it seem fair that in exchange for our little efforts, some of them should now come out of hiding and listen to us poor saps that listened to them? My question is this, why is it that when I look at the daily market reports on the price of oil, I see it dropping almost every day, but when I go to fill up at our local pumps the price jumps a little bit almost every day!
